How far away from wall should hanger rod be?

Giving our closet a makeover- too much wasted space. Going from having one rod across back to two rods on each side. (the closet is kinda square- bout the same size as our half bath on the other side of the wall.) How far from the wall should the mountings be in order for hangers to still fit???
