How to get a clothes makeover?

I am a somewhat introverted geeky college guy and I really want to start dating so what types of clothes should I get? I wear like regular wal mart/Target clothes but I want to try something else. nothing too extreme but something that makes me look good without going overboard. Like what about indie or geek chic? I am also somewhat of an artsy person as in writing and Film. Thanks
